Commission Determines Interim Rate Increase for Xcel Energy’s Natural Gas Rate Request
December 15, 2009
Docket No. G-002/GR-09-1153
On November 12, 2009, Northern States Power Company d/b/a Xcel Energy (Xcel) filed a general rate case with the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (Commission) requesting an increase in its rates for natural gas service of approximately $16.2 million, or 2.8% over existing rates. Minnesota state law provides for a utility to receive an interim rate increase while the rate case is pending.
At a meeting on December 15, 2009, the Commission voted to grant Xcel gas an interim increase of about $11.1 million, or 1.9% over existing rates, beginning on January 11, 2010. If the final increase granted by the Commission is less than the interim increase, Xcel must refund the difference to customers. A final Commission decision is due by December 13, 2010.
Several public hearings will be held around the state where members of the public are encouraged to comment on the proposed rate increase request. Notice of the locations, dates, and time of the public hearings will be sent to customers with their utility bills and published in local newspapers. The public may also provide written comments to the Commission at:
